What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel
After locating Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him.
