What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
