Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile New Leader.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Centered On Security and Migration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and regard for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to address rising violence and significantly reduce immigration.
He frequently blamed immigrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His plans included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, electric fences, and increasing the army presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Continental Shift
Many commentators interpret Kast's victory as part of a wider rightward wave in Latin America, similar to this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Solid Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote win, Kast will not have an overall majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all conservative parties are grouped together.
This political landscape could challenge his agenda, including a vow to reduce public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to offered specifics.
"We have many things about what a Kast administration will be that are uncertain because he has not said how he will implement them," said a political science professor.
The expert added, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right. But where there is much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
