The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
âI'm doing what they were prevented from doing,â Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. âI'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.â
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag â the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that âMy partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
