Taking action inspired by TV series guards, the Danish foreign affairs department has created a nighttime monitoring team—far from guarding against fantasy foes, but to track Donald Trump while Denmark sleeps.

This night watch begins at 5pm local time each day and concludes with a report produced at 7am, which is then circulated throughout the Danish government and concerned agencies detailing statements made and developments that occurred.

This position is understood to have been established following the bilateral row involving Denmark and the US regarding Greenland earlier this year, when the American leader threatened taking control of the resource-rich territory.

Analysts point out that this initiative is among several examples of how Danish diplomacy and its civil service have had to adapt to the changed landscape of the second Trump administration.

A source close to the ministry stated, “It is fair to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time difference separating Copenhagen and the US were quite an important factor introducing this arrangement in the earlier months.”

Instead of everybody needing to immediately reach for their phones to stay informed on news from the United States, the ministry said it had made a collective effort to remain informed on the president's activities.

An expert, a former senior analyst at the defense intelligence service, commented that this development showed, “as we have always known,” that the notion of the US as Denmark's primary partner was no longer valid. “Alliances are founded on common values and a common threat perception,” he said. “The president shares neither of those with Denmark and it can be said he doesn't share it with the majority of Europe.”
