In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
