Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unwanted gifts might be considered slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold via competitive bidding by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

These gifts are currently kept in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

The full gift list is yet to be made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on if a legal value limit was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from international counterparts and positioning Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a unconventional way to manage the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
