Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
