The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears
