Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "total mess," commenting earlier today.

Speaking during a radio program, he referenced comments made by David Lammy following a previous prisoner release, saying that the minister would implement more robust checks.

"There was a delay of almost a week for the prison service reportedly to even become aware this occurred" and notify the police, Jenrick says, "leaving them a week late in the manhunt to find him."

The opposition figure criticises the minister's performance during recent PMQs and accuses him of a "total dereliction of duty."

Speaking about mistaken inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "each accidental release [...] is unacceptable."

He acknowledges there were similar incidents under the former Conservative government, but says the figure "has increased dramatically" under Labour.

Advocating additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he continues: "What the British people want to see now are proper checks implemented."

"This represents a specific administrative failure by the justice department overseen by the minister," the opposition member says.
